Larger pools will have more skimmer boxes and more return jets. Generally, there will be 2 or 3 return jets for every skimmer box. After water pumps through the filter it returns to the pool through the outlet jets. The outlet jets are built into the side walls of the pool at least half a meter 2 ft.
The outlet jets point in different directions to circulate the water around the pool. Many skimmer boxes have two holes located at the bottom of the box. The first hole is the pipe connecting to the filtration system. The pool pump draws water from the pool through the skimmer box to the filter. The second hole is a pipe connecting to the bottom of the pool at the deep end under the drain plate. The hydrostatic valve is also located under the drain plate.
Some pools have the second pipe exiting into the pool lower down under the skimmer box. If the water level ever falls below the skimmer flap the pump cannot draw water into the skimmer box. This will cause the pump to take in air and run dry damaging the pump motor. This second pipe is an equalizer line to prevent the pump sucking air from an empty skimmer box. If you ever want to empty the pool you can purchase a connector to join the two holes pipes together. When the pump is running water will be drawn from the bottom of the pool through the equalizer pipe into the filter pipe.
Set the pump valve to drain and the pump will empty the swimming pool right to the bottom. There is no need to purchase a separate submersible pump or call in the pool service people. No, there is no need to remove the skimmer basket when manually vacuuming the pool. Most skimmer boxes work with a skimmer suction plate inserted into the box to create a vacuum. The vacuum hose connects to the top of the suction plate. When you vacuum the pool the skimmer basket traps larger items of debris protecting the filter from becoming clogged up.
Many pool skimmers come equipped with automatic water level controls and automatic chlorinators. In recent years, floating and robotic pool skimmers have entered the market and offer an alternative to a stationary model.
Operated by batteries or solar power, these automatic skimmers float on the surface of a pool, collecting debris as it moves through the pool. Devotees of products such as the Solar Breeze NX claim it cuts down on time and work, especially in areas prone to winds carrying leaves and debris into the pool or regions with lots of insects. It can also lower the cost of energy bills, as it is designed to work independently of the pool pump.
Other automatic skimmers, such as the whirlpool-like the SkimmerMotion , is designed to connect to an automatic pool cleaner vacuum , then collects surface debris as it floats through the pool.
Debris is sent to the pool's filtration system. Because above-ground pools have thin walls, floating pool skimmers are most often used, as are units that hang on the pool's edge. To keep skimmers for above- and in-ground pools working properly, try to clean out the skimmer basket daily during swim season.
Skimmers for redwood hot tubs usually have no basket; instead, they skim the surface and pull debris to a plastic screen. Some portable spas have skimmers with built-in cartridge filters. At this point, the skimmer basket contains the debris from the pool surface and should be emptied routinely to ensure free water flow and maximum filtering ability.
On some pool designs, the skimmer is also used as a vacuum hose connection for the pool vacuum to keep the pool clean. In these cases, the person cleaning the pool would typically remove the skimmer basket to expose the water inlet to the pool pump. A connection is made for vacuuming and then upon completion, the skimmer basket and lid are reinstalled. To ensure the longevity of the pool pump and filter, it is very important to empty the skimmer basket routinely and frequently.
